Summer Read

Days of Destruction Days of Revolt by Chris Hedges and Joe Sacco,
 Nation Books, New York, 2012.

This brilliant combination of prose and graphic comics reports from the field on four of the poorest, most abandoned areas of the U.S. The plight of the Americans barely existing there reflects the power of the corporate supremacists and their indentured governments to exploit and deny.

Chris Hedges and Joe Sacco: drawing America's invisible poor - audio slideshow | Books | guardian.co.uk:

"Chris Hedges and Joe Sacco: drawing America's invisible poor - audio slideshow
For his latest book, Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt, out this month in paperback, Pulitzer prizewinning author Chris Hedges collaborated with awardwinning cartoonist and journalist Joe Sacco to produce a heartfelt, harrowing picture of post-capitalist America. Together they explore the country's 'sacrifice zones' - areas that have been offered up for exploitation in the name of profit, progress, and technological advancement - and show in words and images what life looks like in places where the marketplace rules without constraints"

We Will Speak Out by James Russell Lowell(1819 – 1891)

We Will Speak Out
by James Russell Lowell(1819 – 1891)
We will speak out, we will be heard,
Though all earth's system's crack;
We will not bate a single word,
Nor take a letter back.
Let liars fear, let cowards shrink,
Let traitors turn away;
Whatever we have dared to think
That dare we also say.
We speak the truth, and what care we
For hissing and for scorn,
While some faint gleamings we can see
Of Freedom's coming morn?

a bit of small-talk

Nancy's  Whiskey Pub. i grabbed an empty stool next to a young lady and exchanged some pleasantries followed by a bit of small talk. As the young woman drank she became saddened and proceeded to tell me her woes.

As her stories became more desperate I followed suit with my owned (silent) desperation.
I needed to exit but,  How could I possibly be so mean as to just walk away? This kid is ready to slit her wrists, I thought.  I prayed that she would catch a cock-blockers’ eye so that he would move in and I would unperceivably slither away. But this wasn’t going to happen, so I endured, never uttering a word myself, barely understanding her muted voice drowned out by the jukebox, occasionally nodding my head to emote an awareness of something uttered outside the range of my understanding.

Suddenly, an hour or so after it had begun, her life-story concluded. She inched closer to me, her mouth almost touching mine and shouted in whisky-tinged, husky, dulcet tone “this is the best conversation I’ve ever had. You’re such a great listener”.

It was then that she kissed me.

A Door just opened on a street
-- by Emily Dickinson

A Door just opened on a street --
I -- lost -- was passing by --
An instant's Width of Warmth disclosed --
And Wealth -- and Company.

The Door as instant shut -- And I --
I -- lost -- was passing by --
Lost doubly -- but by contrast -- most --
Informing -- misery --

I Never Thought I Would...

The Milk Bar is a wonderful blog that i visit now and then,
today it gave me pause and spurred me to comment
on things that i never thought would happen in my life:
=============================================================

. . . be bald, long shoulder-length hair was the norm between the
ages of fifteen and fifty. (i'm sixty now and am used to being the old man in the room).

. . . get used to being the old man in the room. i remember how i bristled the first time i was referred to as "sir" by a younger man. for the first half of my life the refrain was "don't trust anyone over thirty".

. . . trust anyone over thirty. it seems that now-a-days i don't personally know anyone younger than thirty. so, i'm guessing that if i ever trust anyone again it would have to be someone older than thirty, and that includes trusting myself.

. . . trust myself to do all the right things. i spent most of my youth being the bad boy, and most of the time since then learning how to be a man. now that i've almost got it, i'm nearing the end of my life, something that seemed so remote at one point, something i couldn't accept.

. . . accept that my life will end, soon, rather than later. i'm in no rush mind you. its sort of like being on stand-by at an airport. it just is. and not such a bad thing after all.

thank you very much  The Milk Bar, for your post,  you gave me food for thought.

Urban Dictionary: Abraham Lincoln's Internet Wisdom

Urban Dictionary: Abraham Lincoln's Internet Wisdom: "Abraham Lincoln's Internet Wisdom 33 up, 4 down
Shortly after the rise of the blogosphere Abraham Lincoln hosted a dinner party at his Cabin Estate and birthplace in Hodgenville, Kentucky.

After this dinner Abraham Lincoln read from his unpublished memoir: A Humble Man's Advice For Life in the Information Age. By the fireside he read many portions, but the section that most impressed his guests was this one, simple sentence:

"The thing about quotes on the internet is that you cannot confirm their validity."

For the sake of brevity many simply use the acronym ALIW when referring to this tidbit of wisdom.
Luke: Did you read what Justin Bieber said in that TMZ article?
Steve: Yeah, but I'm going with Abraham Lincoln's Internet Wisdom on this one"

Quote of the Day
May 20, 2012

"Where the world financial crisis has brought about the
loss of millions of jobs, socialized private debt
burdens and now risks causing significant human rights
regressions through wide-ranging austerity packages, a
financial transaction tax (FTT) is a pragmatic tool for
providing the means for governments to protect and
fulfil the human rights of their people.'

The Other Side of the River
by Xi Chuan
translated by Lucas Klein

On the other side of the river
there is a flame
a flame
burning May

burning August

when the pagoda tree blooms, the professor with lentigo bows to her
when orange blossoms fall, an heir of graceful demeanor waves to her
and smiles

yet on the other side of the river she remains, still burning
like the underwater glistening of red coral
like a red straw hat blown away in the breeze

when I saw her yesterday she was totally still, looking to the sky
and today she lowers her head to watch the river
if it were overcast and raining, what would she do there on that side
of the river?
—her flame would not go out

a poet looks to her
a farmer looks to her
a Dialectical Materialist looks to her
she is on the other side of the river, burning
burning May
burning August

The Tallest Man on Earth - "Love Is All" (Official Music Video) - YouTube

The Tallest Man on Earth - "Love Is All" (Official Music Video) - YouTube:

Lyrics to The Wild Hunt :
There is a crow moon comin in well you keep looking out
It is the hollow month of march now sweeping in
Lets watch phenomenon's that rise out of the darkness now
Within the light she is my storming heroin
And old machine's abandoned by the ancient racists and
I hear them hummin down below and hollow earth
Oh hell I guess I know no while I will go under to
But just for now I let the spring and storm return

I left my heart to the wild hunt a-comin
I live until the call
And I plan to be forgotten when I'm gone
Yes I'll be leavin' in the fall

And I will sleep out in the glade just by the giant tree
Just to be closer when my spirit's pulled away
I left a nervous little boy out on the trail today
He's just a mortal to the shoutin' cavalcade

I left my heart to the wild hunt a-comin
I live until the call
And I plan to be forgotten when I'm gone
Yes I'll be leavin in the fall

Let's open up the windows have satan departin' now
And we'll be even when the blues fall down like hail
Hell I don't even care no more about cadejo now
If he's a white one or a black one on the trail

I left my heart to the wild hunt a-comin'
I live until the call
And I plan to be forgotten when I'm gone
Yes I'll be leavin in the fall

Yes I'll be leavin in the fall
