Ask A Native New Yorker: Should I Work For A Charter School?: Gothamist:

"Some readers are probably wondering what's so wrong about charter schools. The short answer is that these schools sap resources and disengage families from the public system (particularly in our poorest districts, where they are most concentrated), and represent a slimy, secret campaign by private equity types to privatize education in America. On average they don't perform any better than public schools, and many perform worse."

Evolution debate and textbooks engulfs Texas Board of Education | Fox News

Evolution debate and textbooks engulfs Texas Board of Education | Fox News:

"he issue is important nationally since Texas is so large that many books prepared for publication in the state also are marketed elsewhere around the country.

Publishers from around the country submitted proposed textbooks this summer, but committees of Texas volunteer reviewers — some nominated by socially conservative current and former Board of Education members — raised objections. One argued that creationism based on biblical texts should be taught in science classes, while others objected that climate change wasn't as settled a scientific matter as some of the proposed books said."

Washington Times sues Homeland Security over seizure of reporter's notes - Washington Times

Washington Times sues Homeland Security over seizure of reporter's notes - Washington Times:

"The newspaper alleged that federal agents accompanying Maryland State Police on the raid took materials from Ms. Hudson’s office that were not covered by the search warrant that authorized the collection solely of evidence about guns and a potato launcher allegedly possessed by her husband, Paul Flanagan.

The seized materials included documents the newspaper had obtained under the Freedom of Information Act as well as notes and memos that identified confidential sources from a series of investigative stories that exposed problems inside the Homeland Security Department's Federal Air Marshal Service.

The seizure violated Ms. Hudson’s and the newspaper’s constitutional rights, the court filing argued."

March: Book One | The Comics Journal

March: Book One | The Comics Journal:

"March: Book One is the memoir of Congressman John Lewis (District 5, Georgia) who has had a long and distinguished political career. Lewis is an iconic figure in the struggle for civil rights for African-Americans, and that struggle is the broader subject of his story – as is the resiliency and courage it takes to effect large-scale social change and correct injustices."

Charter Schools and the Future of Public Education | Common Dreams

Charter Schools and the Future of Public Education | Common Dreams:

"In the past decade, the character of the charter school movement has changed dramatically. It's been transformed from community-based, educator-initiated local efforts designed to provide alternative approaches for a small number of students into nationally funded efforts by foundations, investors, and educational management companies to create a parallel, more privatized school system."

Report to the Investors - Lapham’s Quarterly:

"All these islands are most beautiful and distinguished by various forms; one can travel through them, and they are full of trees of the greatest variety, which brush at the stars—and I believe they never lose their foliage. At any rate, I found them as green and beautiful as they usually are in the month of May in Spain; some of them were in bloom, some loaded with fruit, some flourished in one state, others in the other, each according to its kind."

Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere Banned in New Mexico School District | Comic Book Legal Defense Fund:

"Yesterday, the Alamogordo High School removed Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere from shelves after parent Nancy Wilmott complained over content she deemed innapropriate for her 15-year-old daughter. The book has been on district required reading lists since 2004, but it has not been challenged before Wilmott took exception to language and what she called “sexual innuendo” in the book, claiming that “This is rated R material, and she cannot get into a rated R movie.”"

i have a kindle, a nook, a tablet, a smartphone, and a PC! each has its own place and its own comforts. but a book, the smell of it, the little notes that previous readesr write in the margins, the stamps and labels on the inside cover denoting its provenance . . . the feel of a book, the flipping of pages . . . to read the title of a book in someone else's hand . . . to fall asleep with an open book on one's breast . . . oh, Gutenberg, how well you loved us!

'Unintimidated' Solidarity Sing Along makes title of Scott Walker's forthcoming book its own - Isthmus | The Daily Page:

"The battle for Wisconsin is the centerpiece of two books set to be published this fall. One, by Gov. Scott Walker, will offer his perspective on the Capitol protests and recall election. The other will tell the story of the Solidarity Sing Along as experienced by its participants. Both are titled Unintimidated, and that's not a coincidence."

A teacher’s first day jitters…and dreams - United for Public Schools

A teacher’s first day jitters…and dreams - United for Public Schools:

"My best hypothesis is that my empty classroom nightmare originates from a prevailing fear of being unprepared. Because I take pride in my work and aspire to be the best teacher possible for the students I will meet tomorrow, my instinct is to plan diligently for their success. The catch is that, in reality, there is very little I can do to prepare learning experiences for people I do not know. I feel like a novice teacher today because without knowing my students, my professional wisdom means nothing. I know how to plan a lesson, but I don’t know what these students will need to learn or which strategies will help them learn best. I know the basics of how to build a relationship, but I don’t know my students’ prior experiences with teachers. I know how to grade an essay, but I don’t know what my students will care to explore and express in their writing this year."

Sunday

Bread and roses, bread and roses!

As we come marching, marching, in the beauty of the day,
A million darkened kitchens, a thousand mill lofts grey,
Are touched with all the radiance that a sudden sun discloses
For the people hear us singing,
"Bread and roses, bread and roses!"

As we come marching, marching, we battle too for men
For they are women's children and we mother them again.
Our lives shall not be sweated from birth until life closes,
Hearts can starve as well as bodies,
"Give us bread and give us roses!"

As we come marching, marching, unnumbered women dead
Go crying through our city their ancient song of bread.
Small art and love and beauty their drudging spirits knew-
Yes, it is bread that we fight for,
But we fight for roses too!

As we come marching, marching, we bring the greater day,
The rising of the women will show us all the way!
No more the drudge and idler, ten that toil where one reposes,
But a sharing of life's glories,
"Bread and roses, bread and roses!"
