Early Mod philosophy » 3:AM Magazine: "There is a classic article, “Seven thinkers and how they grew: Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz; Locke, Berkeley, Hume; Kant,” by Bruce Kuklick which tells the historically contingent story of how this list became canonical in America. That is not to say that anyone on the list is unworthy of their status—all of those philosophers are important thinkers who wrote deep, systematic works. But so did Malebranche and Hobbes, and both were exceedingly influential, arguably more so than Berkeley or even Spinoza. "

"With most of the Freedom Riders injured, and the danger of the violence escalating to the point of someone being killed, it was suggested that the Freedom Rides should be discontinued. Nashville student Diane Nash, a leader in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) felt that if violence were allowed to halt the Freedom Rides, the movement would be set back years.
She pushed to find replacements to resume the ride, and on May 17th, a new set of riders, students from Nashville, took a bus to Birmingham. There, they were arrested by Plice Chief Bull Connor and jailed. These students kept their spirits up in jail by singing Freedom Songs. Out of frustration, Police Chief Bull Connor drove them back up to the Tennessee line and dropped them off stating "I just couldn't stand their singing.""

A Whiter Shade of Pale
We skipped the light fandango
Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick
But the crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
And the waiter brought a tray
And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale

"One for my Baby (and one more for the road)"
| Cover of Johnny Mercer |
| Cover of Harold Arlen |
It's quarter to three, there's no one in the place
Except you and me
So set 'em' up joe, I got a little story you autta know
We're drinking my friend, to the end
Of a brief episode
Make it one for my baby
And one more for the road
I know the routine, put another nickel
In the machine
I'm feelin so bad, I hope they make the music
dreamy and sad
I could tell you a lot, but it's not
In a gentleman's code
Make it one for my baby
And one more for the road
You'd never know it, but buddy i'm a kind of poet
And i've got a lot of things i'd like to say
And if i'm gloomy, please listen to me
Till it's talked away
Well that's how it goes, and joe i know your gettin'
Anxious to close
Thanks for the cheer
I hope you didn't mind
My bending your ear
But this torch that i found, it's gotta be drowned
Or it's gonna explode
Make it one for my baby
And one more for the road
Writen by Johnny Mercer and Harold Arlen.

$1 Billion In Tax Dollars To Miseducate Our Children
| Accountability (Photo credit: Felix42 contra la censura) |
"While the proponents of school choice argue that public schools are not properly equipping children for success in the real world and need to be held accountable, they often reject accountability for private schools that use textbooks that not only are overtly sectarian, but pass off highly controversial assertions – or outright falsehoods – as indisputable fact. All too frequently, low-income children and people of color are used as pawns in this push for what amounts to little more than the right to use taxpayer dollars for right-wing indoctrination."

There Are So Many Great Books Here, And Yet So Many You Won’t Read In School:
"Here’s a list of fantastic books written in the 21st century. It’s a great example of how many wonderful books have been written in our recent past, and I think more of them should be taught in schools. Except for "Twilight." Burn the "Twilight" books."

The Junkie Genius - James Parker - The Atlantic:
"How do you write a masterpiece? It’s inside you, you know it’s inside you: How do you get it out? Well, if you’re William S. Burroughs, malingering and malefacting through the mid-20th century, you follow a procedure that resembles something from the nonsense kitchen of the poet Edward Lear, one of his recipes for Gosky Patties or Crumbobblious Cutlets. Ohio State Rep: 'Public Education In America Is Socialism, What Is The Solution?': ""I’m not blaming the teachers unions or the local school boards who are bound to the contracts, because if they don’t they will end up with strikes and an arbitrator will rule against them," Brenner wrote. "These issues all stemmed from the fact that we have a socialist education system in the first place.""

AFT - A Union of Professionals - Charter Schools: "Charter schools hold promise as engines of innovation and reform, but just as there are good and bad public schools, there are good and bad charter schools. Unfortunately, some charter school operators stifle input, exploit their staff, and put profit ahead of students' needs. Teachers working in poorly managed charter schools are the first to acknowledge this reality."

Girl Power: Books for Bold Women | The New York Public Library:
"Smart, strong women deserve books filled with smart, strong female characters. Luckily, there are many books with protagonists who speak out for justice, make courageous choices, and know that womanhood is beautiful. That's why we've compiled a list of recommendations for the woman who expects her fiction to be as bold as she is. From Haitian short fiction to literature of the southern immigrant experience, these books will make you believe in girl power."

"" However, once Lincoln warmed up, "his face lighted up as with an inward fire; the whole man was transfigured. I forgot his clothes, his personal appearance, and his individual peculiarities. Presently, forgetting myself, I was on my feet like the rest, yelling like a wild Indian, cheering this wonderful man.""
