The Heart is a lonely hunter with only one desire! To find some lasting comfort in the arms of anothers fire...driven by a desperate hunger to the arms of a neon light, the heart is a lonely hunter when there's no sign of love in sight!”

YOU AIN'T BEEN DOIN' NOTHIN' IF YOU AIN'T BEEN CALLED A RED
Music, traditional; lyrics by Eliot Keenan (USA).

1. Oh, when I was just a little thing, I used to love parades,
With banners, bands and red balloons and maybe lemonade.
When I came home on May Day, my neighbour’s father said,
"Them marchers are all Commies. Tell me, kid, are you a Red?”

CHORUS 1: Oh, you ain't done nothin' if you ain't been called a Red.
If you march or agitate, you're bound to hear it said;
So you might as well ignore it, or love the words instead,
'Cause you ain't been doin' nothin' if you ain't been called a Red.

2. Well, I didn't know just what he meant. my hair back then was brown.
Our house was plain red brick like most others in the town.
So I went and asked my parents why my playmates called me Red.
My mama took me on her knee and this is what she said:

CHORUS 2: Oh, you ain't done nothin' if you ain't been called a Red.
If you march or agitate, you're bound to hear it said;
So you might as well ignore it, or love the words instead,
'Cause you ain't been doin' nothin' if you ain't been called a Red.

3. As I was growing up, I had my troubles, I suppose,
When someone took exception to my face or to my clothes,
Or tried to cheat me on the job, or hit me on the head;
When I organised a fight back, why, the stinkers called me Red!

CHORUS 3: Oh, you ain't done nothin' if you ain't been called a Red.
If you organise your workplace, then you're bound to hear it said;
So you might as well ignore it, or love the words instead,
'Cause you ain't been doin' nothin' if you ain't been called a Red.

4. When I was living on my own, one apartment that I had
Had a classic rotten landlord. let me tell you, he was BAD.
But when he tried to throw me out, I rubbed my hands and said,
“You haven't seen a struggle if you haven't fought a Red.”

CHORUS 4: Oh, you ain't done nothin' if you ain't been called a Red.
If you organise your neighbours, then you're bound to hear it said;
So you might as well ignore it, or love the words instead,
'Cause you ain't been doin' nothin' if you ain't been called a Red.

5. Well, I kept on agitating, 'cause what else can you do?
Are you gonna let the sons-of-bitches walk all over you?
My neighbour said, “You'll get fired hanging with that Commie mob!”
I should be so lucky, buddy, I ain't got a job!

CHORUS 5: Oh, you ain't done nothin' if you ain't been called a Red.
If you organise your workplace, then you're bound to hear it said;
So you might as well ignore it, or love the words instead,
'Cause you ain't been doin' nothin' if you ain't been called a Red.

6. Well, I been agitating now for forty years and more,
For jobs and for equality and always against war,
And I'll keep on agitating as far as I can see,
And if that's what being Red is, well it's good enough for me!

CHORUS 6: Oh, you ain't done nothin' if you ain't been called a Red,
If you march or agitate, you're bound to hear it said;
So you might as well ignore it, or love the words instead,
'Cause you ain't been doin' nothin' if you ain't been called a Red.

Red Riding Trilogy:

 "“Here is one that got away and lived to tell the tale: from Karachi Social Club and Griffin Hotel; Wakefield nick and St. Mary’s Hostel; motorways and carparks; parks and toilets; idle rich and unemployed; from shit they sell and shit we buy; from kids with no moms, and moms with no kid; from all dead meat, to my dead friends; pubs and clubs; from gutters and stars; local tips and old slag heaps; from badgers and owls, wolves and swans; here is a son of Yorkshire, here is one that got away. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, all good children go to heaven”"

"Work -  Emma Lazarus

 Yet life is not a vision nor a prayer,
But stubborn work; she may not shun her task.
After the first compassion, none will spare
Her portion and her work achieved, to ask.
She pleads for respite,—she will come ere long
When, resting by the roadside, she is strong.

 Nay, for the hurrying throng of passers-by
Will crush her with their onward-rolling stream.
Much must be done before the brief light die;
She may not loiter, rapt in the vain dream.
With unused trembling hands, and faltering feet,
She staggers forth, her lot assigned to meet.

 But when she fills her days with duties done,
Strange vigor comes, she is restored to health.
New aims, new interests rise with each new sun,
And life still holds for her unbounded wealth.
All that seemed hard and toilsome now proves small,
And naught may daunt her,—she hath strength for all."

 "Frank Rose had a tsundoku problem. After he retired several years ago from his job as a state employee -- he lives in Sacramento -- he accelerated his purchases. Two years ago, he told the Friends of the Arden-Dimick Library in Sacramento that he’d donate his books when he died, the Sacramento Bee reports. By this summer, his collection had grown to 13,000 volumes."

 "The Federal Communications Commission voted Friday to approve the funding for the program called E-Rate. The extra money will mainly come from efficiencies within the E-Rate program, including no longer paying for outdated technologies such as pagers, as well as spending money that's in reserve."

 "“People have long forgotten the virtues of organized labor  –and the benefits most workers enjoy that were fought for and earned by unions . Minimum wage … weekends … sick leave … workers’ comp … child labor laws? Etc. etc. etc.? Meh. Now, public workers who want that stuff are lazy and greedy. (But private-sector people who get such benefits deserve them…!)”"

Forbidden Bookshelf | Open Road Integrated Media:

 "For over half a century, America's vast literary culture has been disparately policed, and imperceptibly contained, by state and corporate entities well-placed and perfectly equipped to wipe out wayward writings. As America does not ban books, other means—less evident, and so less controversial—have been deployed to vaporize them.  The purpose of Forbidden Bookshelf is to bring such vanished books to life. These works pull some of the most troubling trends and episodes in US history from the shadows, shed light on how America got to its present moment, and show us how we all might change direction."

 "In another part of the study, some laptop users were instructed to avoid taking verbatim notes. Instructors explained that “people who take class notes on laptops when they expect to be tested on the material later tend to transcribe what they’re hearing without thinking about it much.” But members of that group received lower scores in both conceptual and factual tests than did their longhand counterparts."

Early Mod philosophy » 3:AM Magazine

Early Mod philosophy » 3:AM Magazine: "There is a classic article, “Seven thinkers and how they grew: Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz; Locke, Berkeley, Hume; Kant,” by Bruce Kuklick which tells the historically contingent story of how this list became canonical in America. That is not to say that anyone on the list is unworthy of their status—all of those philosophers are important thinkers who wrote deep, systematic works. But so did Malebranche and Hobbes, and both were exceedingly influential, arguably more so than Berkeley or even Spinoza. "

Freedom_Ride_DB_Fankhauser:

 "With most of the Freedom Riders injured, and the danger of the violence escalating to the point of someone being killed,  it was suggested that the Freedom Rides should be discontinued.  Nashville student Diane Nash, a leader in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) felt that if violence were allowed to halt the Freedom Rides, the movement would be set back years.

  She pushed to find replacements to resume the ride, and on May 17th, a new set of riders, students from Nashville, took a bus to Birmingham. There, they were arrested by Plice Chief Bull Connor and jailed. These students kept their spirits up in jail by singing Freedom Songs. Out of frustration, Police Chief Bull Connor drove them back up to the Tennessee line and dropped them off stating "I just couldn't stand their singing.""

A Whiter Shade of Pale

We skipped the light fandango
Turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick
But the crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
As the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
And the waiter brought a tray

And so it was that later
As the miller told his tale
That her face, at first just ghostly,
Turned a whiter shade of pale
