"Some readers are probably wondering what's so wrong about charter schools. The short answer is that these schools sap resources and disengage families from the public system (particularly in our poorest districts, where they are most concentrated), and represent a slimy, secret campaign by private equity types to privatize education in America. On average they don't perform any better than public schools, and many perform worse."

Publishers from around the country submitted proposed textbooks this summer, but committees of Texas volunteer reviewers — some nominated by socially conservative current and former Board of Education members — raised objections. Washington Times sues Homeland Security over seizure of reporter's notes - Washington Times:
"The newspaper alleged that federal agents accompanying Maryland State Police on the raid took materials from Ms. Hudson’s office that were not covered by the search warrant that authorized the collection solely of evidence about guns and a potato launcher allegedly possessed by her husband, Paul Flanagan.
The seized materials included documents the newspaper had obtained under the Freedom of Information Act as well as notes and memos that identified confidential sources from a series of investigative stories that exposed problems inside the Homeland Security Department's Federal Air Marshal Service.
The seizure violated Ms. Hudson’s and the newspaper’s constitutional rights, the court filing argued."

"My best hypothesis is that my empty classroom nightmare originates from a prevailing fear of being unprepared. Because I take pride in my work and aspire to be the best teacher possible for the students I will meet tomorrow, my instinct is to plan diligently for their success. The catch is that, in reality, there is very little I can do to prepare learning experiences for people I do not know. I feel like a novice teacher today because without knowing my students, my professional wisdom means nothing. I know how to plan a lesson, but I don’t know what these students will need to learn or which strategies will help them learn best. I know the basics of how to build a relationship, but I don’t know my students’ prior experiences with teachers. I know how to grade an essay, but I don’t know what my students will care to explore and express in their writing this year."

Bread and roses, bread and roses!
As we come marching, marching, in the beauty of the day,
A million darkened kitchens, a thousand mill lofts grey,
Are touched with all the radiance that a sudden sun discloses
For the people hear us singing,
"Bread and roses, bread and roses!"
As we come marching, marching, we battle too for men
For they are women's children and we mother them again.
Our lives shall not be sweated from birth until life closes,
Hearts can starve as well as bodies,
"Give us bread and give us roses!"
As we come marching, marching, unnumbered women dead
Go crying through our city their ancient song of bread.
Small art and love and beauty their drudging spirits knew-
Yes, it is bread that we fight for,
But we fight for roses too!
As we come marching, marching, we bring the greater day,
The rising of the women will show us all the way!
No more the drudge and idler, ten that toil where one reposes,
But a sharing of life's glories,
"Bread and roses, bread and roses!"

Suddenly, King the orator stopped reading his text and became King the Baptist preacher.
"Even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream," he began -- much to the chagrin of his startled adviser Mr. Walker."
